Robert McDougald, a rising fifth-grader at Sunset Park Elementary, implemented a plastic bottle recycling program in his fourth-grade classroom. Robert placed a box in the room to collect the bottles, and each week he brought them home for recycling.

Windy Ridge School rising seventh-grader Rachel Gari-Sue Narzissenfeld participated in the national West Point Bridge Design Contest as a member of the Army team. After placing in the top five in the country in the semifinals, Rachel was named first-place winner of the Army team and invited to compete against the top Navy team in the finals at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Rachel; her father, Gary; and gifted teacher, Michael Cohen, attended the event, where Rachel received a trophy from Brig. Gen. Timothy Trainor. In addition to the all-expenses-paid trip to West Point, Rachel received a Dell laptop.

Southwest Middle student Amy Smith placed first at the school and district
levels of the Modern Woodmen of America Civic Oration Contest. Amy advanced to the state level, where she placed third. This year’s topic was “A Time in History When Volunteers Made a Difference.”

More than 1,600 students from four counties competed in the Central Florida Education Guide’s annual art contest. Congratulations to Foundation Academy students Tal Minks, who placed first in the high school division; and Sophia Murray, who placed in the top 10 in the middle school division. Last year, Sophia placed first in the elementary school division.
