As part of Orange County Public Schools’ Teach-In 2011 event, guest speakers Valerie Michaels of the Southwest Orlando Bulletin and professional photographer Johnna Seifert visited Keene’s Crossing Elementary third-graders in M. Afraz Jagarnath’s class. Mrs. Michaels explained newspaper publishing, and Ms. Seifert discussed photography.

While learning about the history of Winter Garden, Lake Whitney Elementary fourth-graders in Michelle Kantor’s class tour The Edgewater Hotel and Garden Theatre in historic downtown Winter Garden.

 During the month of October, MetroWest Elementary students collected $1,891 for Olive Garden’s Pasta for Pennies program, which benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As part of Orange County Public Schools’ Teach-In 2011, Fifth Third Bank representative Jake Underwood spoke to Ruthann Paul-Suess’ fifth-graders about checks and other banking topics, as well as helped the children with their Pasta for Pennies donation.

As part of Orange County Public Schools’ Teach-In 2011 event, T-Rex Café executive chef Vasken Jibilian visited with Sand Lake Elementary fifth-graders and demonstrated how to make Ice Age Indulgence, one of the restaurant’s signature desserts. T-Rex Café is an active SLES Partner in Education.

Spring Lake Elementary students Emily Arias, Byron Johnson, Carly Keen, Roberto Macareno, Ixcel Orozco, Ethan Pierce, Axel Rodriguez and Kaleb Shanaway displayed their artwork in the Principal’s Art Gallery, which was installed by art teacher Stephanie Miller in the school’s front office.

Thornebrooke Elementary’s PTO sponsored a Destination College tailgate party, where students and teachers showed school spirit by wearing their favorite college shirts. The event also included food, music and games.
