As part of Orange County Public Schools’ Teach-In 2011 event, guest speaker Jackie Lemeiux taught Bay Meadows Elementary first-graders in Julie Gifford’s class about scales. Ms. Lemeiux used chocolate-chip cookies to demonstrate scales from one through four.

In observance of Prevention/Back Care Month, Dr. Phillips Elementary school nurse Vicki Setzer and wellness representative Barb Wilt conducted a backpack weigh-in. More than 200 students were weighed wearing their backpacks to determine if the weight was more than 15 percent of the student’s total weight. All participants were entered into a drawing, where 25 students won new backpacks.

Windermere Elementary’s PTA held its annual Holiday Shop, where students purchased gifts for their family members, friends and pets. Proceeds were donated to Give Kids The World, Pet Rescue by Judy, and the school’s Guardian Angel Project. Students were allowed to select which charity they wanted to support with their purchases.
