| Spring Lake Elementary was one of six Florida schools that received The Florida Title I Distinguished Schools 2010-11 award for sustaining high levels of academic achievement and closing the achievement gap for students in the No Child Left Behind subgroups. More than 1,800 Florida Title I schools are eligible for this distinguished recognition. SLES Principal Angela Murphy-Osborne credited the school’s achievement to community involvement and the dedication of the staff. Students have access to tutoring from volunteer teachers and classified employees before, during and after school hours. |

Southwest Middle eighth-grader Ryan Goonen was given a President’s Volunteer Service Award by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The award was created as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Ryan accumulated more than 100 community-service hours in 2011. In addition to the award certificate, he received a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama and a gold lapel pin. |

Olympia High’s PTSA board members kicked off the 2011-12 school year with numerous events and projects. Recently, the PTSA sponsored the Wines Around the World wine-tasting fundraiser at Tim’s Wine Market in Windermere. The event raised $1,350, which will be used to fund PTSA projects throughout the year. |

He discussed WPS’s highly respected curriculum and teaching methods. Mr. Lyng is a graduate of Indiana University, and he earned a Ph.D. from Purdue University. |
