After a tremendous performance at the district tournament, Dr. Phillips High School’s men’s golf team advanced to the regional championship for the first time in six years. Led by sophomore Jonathan Sundstrom (78), senior Matt Stokes (80), sophomore Eric Shiar (80), and senior Kevin Jones (82), the Panthers shot a team score of 320 to place second at the district tournament. First place went to West Orange High School, and Olympia High School earned third-place honors. All three teams advanced to the regional tournament. |

West Orange High School’s women’s golf team traveled to Highland Ridge Golf Club in Sebring, where the Warriors placed third in the second flight of the Crutchfield/Hawkins Invitational, the largest high school golf tournament in Florida. Teams from 25 public and private schools were divided into three flights, with WOHS competing against nine other teams in Flight 2. Chelsea Adams of Windermere led the team with a 77 and placed first individually in the flight and fifth overall. |

Congratulations to the following Dr. Phillips High School teams and student athletes who were recently recognized for their accomplishments: Water polo players Mary Campbell, Rachel Dytrych, David James, Shannon MacNeil and Ryan Staton were named to the USA Water Polo Academic All-American team. Senior Roderick Lawrence verbally committed to play collegiate basketball at Morehead State University in Kentucky. Senior pitcher Jecoliah Pratt committed to play undergraduate softball at Brevard College in North Carolina. Members of the Panthers football team participated in a community-service project at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, as well as volunteered at a local homeless shelter. A third community-service day is being planned. DPHS’s athletics department will be launching a Community Service Request page on its PantherZone website, dpathletics.ocps.net. Local businesses, schools and residents will be able to request assistance with projects and even specify which teams or players they would like to make appearances. Coach Anthony Jones received the inaugural Outstanding Coach of the Year in Central Florida SPORTY Award. The award is presented by the Central Florida Sports Commission, which honors the best amateur, collegiate and professional athletes, coaches, volunteers and businesses. Last season, Jones earned state championships in both women’s basketball and flag football. |

The Orlando Magic hosted its 21st annual Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Golf Tournament at Disney’s Palm and Magnolia courses. More than 200 players participated in this year’s event, including Magic staff, talent and celebrities. Throughout the past 21 years, OMYF has raised and distributed more than $16 million to local nonprofit community agencies serving at-risk youth. |
Montverde Academy junior Kailin Kesselring is named world grand champion at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration held in Shelbyville, Tenn. |
Kailin Kesselring traveled to Shelbyville, Tenn., where she participated in the 11-day Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. The Montverde Academy junior and her horse, Vindicated, aka KK, competed in the Owner-Amateur Novice Youth Riders 12-17 division. All five judges unanimously selected Kesselring as the winner, very rare at an equestrian event at this level, and she was named world grand champion. Her proud father is MVA Headmaster Kasey Kesselring. |
