Holy Family Catholic School 2010-11 senior Mikaela Garrott was named as the school’s salutatorian. The Saddlebrook resident was a member of the National Junior Honor Society and played clarinet and saxophone in the school band. She also is on the YMCA Aquatic Center swim team, plays the piano and volunteers in the community. |

Windermere Preparatory School reached an enrollment milestone when its 1,000th student was registered for the 2011-12 school year. Parents George and Joy Taylor, who moved from Missouri to Keene’s Pointe last year, were the surprise recipients of WPS’s 1,000th student celebration. |

Representatives from the Orlando Magic Youth Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund, presented a $20,000 grant to Cindy Williams, Orange County Public Schools Read 2 Succeed executive director. Thanks in part to the grant, OCPS was able to assist about 450 second-graders who have reading problems. The goal of the program is to advance the students to their grade reading level, or better, by the end of the school year. |

Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Ronald Blocker received the inaugural Florida Association for Media in Education 2011 Administrator Advocacy Award. The Southwest resident was selected based on his leadership and contributions to the promotion of effective school library programs and services. Mr. Blocker emphasizes keeping certified library media specialists in schools, maintaining quality and current book collections, advancing technology skills and managing continuous access to resources. Later this month, he will be recognized during FAME’s conference, where media specialists from across the state will be in attendance. |
