| Orange County’s top high school athletes were honored at the annual Bright House Sports Network Breakfast of Champions held at Bright House Networks Stadium at the University of Central Florida. More than 30 male and female athletes from Orange County high schools were recognized, as well as David Brailey of Winter Park High School, who was named Coach of the Year. The Central Florida Sports Commission and Orange County Public Schools served as local co-hosts for the event. Congratulations to the following Southwest-area athletes who were recognized at the event: Dr. Phillips High School students Taryn Griffey, women’s basketball; Bridget Blake, women’s cross country; Hannah Schaible, flag football; Demetrius Hart, football-offense; and Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix, football-defense; Olympia High School students Karley White, women’s lacrosse; and Steyn Funk, men’s swimming and diving; West Orange High School student DerRenae Freeman, women’s track; and Ocoee High School student Giselle Delgado, Girls Scholar Athlete and recipient of a $500 scholarship from Bright House Networks. |
| Orlando Youth Rugby Club concluded its winter season with a 40-39 win over the Brevard Redeyes. The players currently are focusing on the summer season, which began last month. | Florida Citrus Sports President Larry Ruffin and CEO Steve Hogan announced a $100,000 donation to benefit victims of the recent tornadoes that struck the Southeast. FCS manages the Capital One Bowl, which hosts football teams from the Southeastern Conference. It has partnered with local ABC affiliate, WFTV Channel 9, to raise money for residents of Tuscaloosa, Ala., home of The University of Alabama. Hogan and Ruffin are asking Central Florida residents to match the donation, which will be allocated to organizations like The University of Alabama Acts of Kindness Fund and GiveTuscaloosa.com.
