MetroWest Elementary officials sent three student representatives to the Orange County Elementary Science Fair. Madison Brinkman presented her project titled Growing Green, and fellow students Daniel Leongomez and Gavin Ray presented their projects titled Destroying DNA and Oxidation of Metals, respectively. |
| Ocoee Elementary Instructional Technology Coordinator Tammy Lundman received a grant from The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools to supply much-needed headphones for lab computers. The Listen to Learn grant allows students to use the headphones while working on programs in the computer lab. |

Spring Lake Elementary hosted its school level Modern Woodmen of America Civic Oration Contest. Finalists Maegan Conlon, Mitchell Gile, Megan Kelly, Ryan Lattner, Amy Panchano, Adriana Ross and Garrett Tinch worked hard on their presentations; and Ryan, Mitchell and Garrett earned first-, second- and third-place honors, respectively. |

Congratulations to Thornebrooke Elementary 2010-11 fifth-grader Juliana Kaiser for winning Orange County Reading Council’s inaugural Bookmark Contest. More than 1,000 students from across Orange County entered the contest, which asked children to create a bookmark depicting their favorite places to read. One thousand copies of Juliana’s winning bookmark, which showed her reading in a tree, were distributed to TES students. In recognition of her achievement, she also received a $25 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble Booksellers. |

During the 2010-11 school year, Whispering Oak Elementary third-graders in David Puritz’s class wrote letters twice a month to pen pals at Shingle Creek Elementary. Each class visited the other school so the students could experience a different school environment. The exercise promoted development of students’ writing and communication skills, and encouraged them to make new friends. |
