| Sixteen Keene’s Crossing Elementary students were recognized for their commitment to reading with a trip in a limousine to Barnes & Noble Booksellers, a gift card and lunch. The children read at least eight books on the Sunshine State Young Readers list, with some reading as many as 16. Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn was on hand to congratulate the students, and Principal Sherry Donaldson commended them for their commitment, as well as spoke about her own personal library. |

Among the honorees were Lisa McCarthy and Kyle McLaughlin, who received volunteer and student volunteer of the year awards, respectively; and LWES PTO Vice President of Communications Blakely Meyers, who received the Gold Dolphin Award. Local business winners included Windermere Country Club, which was named business partner of the year, and Ogden Orthodontics, named community volunteer of the year. |

Thirty-two 2010-11 fourth-graders and 29 fifth-graders participated on Sand Lake Elementary’s Math Team and were among nearly 150,000 students worldwide to compete in the Math Olympiad. SLES’s fifth-grade team was recognized for placing among the top 20 percent of competitors, and the children received Meritorious Achievement Certificates in recognition of their skills. In addition, Michael Kuo, Jeffrey Liang, Kelli Ross and Reece Simon placed among the top 10 percent of competitors, and Graham Jordan was ranked among the top 2 percent, earning a gold pin. |

Every year, Windermere Elementary science lab teacher Lynn Tidmus and Scott Tidmus of Disney’s Animal Kingdom coordinate a conservation project for students. This year, students raised $2,500 for Change for Conservation, which supports red-necked ostrich reintroduction in Niger, Africa. The money was enough to adopt five ostriches for a year. |

Windermere resident Steven Myers was named a grand-prize winner of General Mills’ Box Tops for Education sweepstakes and received 100,000 Box Tops, totaling $10,000, in support of Bridgewater Middle. His daughter, Georgia, was a sixth-grader at the school during the 2010-11 school year. School officials said they are considering using the money to purchase much-needed books and periodicals for the student library. The sweepstakes, which was available at participating Publix Super Markets, awarded a total of four grand prizes to schools across the region. |
